There are a number of kinds of Central Heating Systems on the market these days. Most of them consist of a set of heating heating radiators, a boiler and copper pipework.
Air conditioning is not a priority for residents of Europe and northern countries as these regions experience cold weather most of the year with short duration summers. Two kinds of Gas Central Heating Systems are mainly in use; pumped/vented and sealed systems.
Pumped/vented systems are the most frequent. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System has a feed and expansion tank. Your heating radiators are heated and your water is stored in a hot water tank. Water expands when heated; this expansion is accommodated in a feed-expansion tank. The tank is positioned at the point of maximum height, usually in the attic area to create water pressure. The hot water tank has two main functions; to heat the house and and provide hot water for washing.
For many years now, pumped/vented systems have been the norm for Gas Central Heating.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. As the name suggests, sealed system is a closed system; no tank is required in this system. There are no pipework or tanks also in the attic, the system is sealed in the true sense and it has its own advantages.
- Frozen loft pipes are no longer a problem.
- No maintenance work on the tank or pipes that would be in the attic in a pumped/vented system.
- This decreases the chances of a possible leakage.
- Unlike pumped/vented systems, air is not drawn through open vents so the possibility of airlocks, corroding and sludge is much lower.
- If necessary, the system can be flushed out under pressure using the main water supply.
The sealed Central Heating system is a fully packaged system with all the controls and safety devices already in place. The water for a sealed Central Heating System is supplied direct from the main water supply. It feeds directly from the main water supply.
A pressure vessel containing compressed gas, which is kept separate from the sealed system by a diaphragm, is used to allow any pressure variations. The safety valve opens up when the pressure in the system rises so that water can escape through it, on the other hand it opens up when the pressure drops down so that the water can refill the system.
Compared to any other form of heating, Gas Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. And they provide you with much more control and choice when it comes to your heating compared to any other systems.
